Allergy Symptoms Relief
Allergy symptoms mimic the
symptoms of other upper respiratory conditions that affect the nasal cavity and
sinuses, such as a runny nose and eyes. Allergy symptoms also have specific
treatments, including medication and self-care methods. Medications such as
antihistamines, decongestants, or a combination of both are available
over-the-counter or by prescription to treat allergy symptoms. Some allergy
symptoms occur immediately after exposure to an allergen, while others take
hours or days. The severity and kinds of allergy symptoms depend on a person’s
genetics, the allergic condition, and the type and amount of allergens involved.
Allergies and Symptoms
Allergies are the immune
systems incorrect response to a foreign substance. Allergies cannot be
prevented, but they can be treated and controlled. It is estimated that true
food allergies occur in 2-5% of the population. People who have food allergies
must identify and prevent them because, although usually mild and not severe,
these reactions can cause devastating illness and, in rare instances, be fatal.
Food allergies develop when there is an IgE antibody to a specific food.
Symptoms of food allergy
include asthma (wheezing, coughing), hives, runny nose, vomiting, diarrhea, and
swelling in the area around the mouth. Moderate reactions can include symptoms
that spread to other parts of the body, including itchiness and difficulty
breathing. It is not clear in all cases, however, if the improved symptoms are
an indication that the allergy has disappeared. Food intolerance also is an
abnormal response to food, and its symptoms can resemble those of food allergy.
