Medications such as antihistamines, decongestants, or a combination of both are available over-the-counter or by prescription to treat symptoms. Some symptoms occur immediately after exposure to an allergen, while others take hours or days. The severity and kinds of symptoms depend on a person’s genetics, the allergic condition, and the type and amount of allergens involved.

People who have food allergies must identify and prevent them because, although usually mild and not severe, these reactions can cause devastating illness and, in rare instances, be fatal. Food allergies develop when there is an IgE antibody to a specific food.
